More about Digital and mechanical timers

Timers are devices that measure and control time intervals. They are usually used by gardeners to control lighting or irrigation systems. The timer "turns on and off" the electricity and thus controls when your pump runs or when the lights come on. You can also control the fans in your room with a timer.

Digital timer or mechanical timer

Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of each type:

Mechanical timer:

  • Easy to use and intuitive.
  • Requires no batteries or electricity to operate.
  • More affordable and durable compared to digital models.
  • Easier to set up without the need for complex features.

Disadvantages:

  • Lower accuracy compared to digital models.
  • Additional functions such as a countdown timer, saving programs and others are missing.

Digital timer:

  • Higher accuracy in time measurement.
  • They usually have additional features such as a countdown timer, multiple programming and even the ability to adjust the volume.
  • They are easy to read thanks to the digital display.
  • They can measure longer time intervals.

Disadvantages:

  • More complicated to set up, especially if they have a lot of features.
  • They may be more expensive compared to mechanical timers.

It is important to note that with digital timers, a power outage can reset the timer and erase the settings. In such cases it is good to use a digital timer with a battery that saves the settings until you have electricity again.

We recommend that new gardeners start with a mechanical timer.
