Perlite - all about its benefits and uses
Perlite is an extremely useful material that is widely used in gardening and agriculture. Agro Perlite (which is finer and lighter than that used for building purposes) has been specially developed to be used by both professional and amateur gardeners.
What is perlite?
Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral which, after heat treatment between 850°C and 1000°C, expands and forms light, porous granules. These granules improve soil structure by increasing its airiness and moisture holding capacity.
The benefits of perlite
• Improves drainage: Especially in traditional cultivation in soil substrates, perlite is an almost mandatory component that improves the structure of the mixture. It increases the ability of the substrate to release excess moisture, which facilitates the development of a healthy root system and reduces the risk of rotting.
• Increases aeration: At the same time, perlite increases the amount of air in the substrate. This is important for the root system, as it needs access to oxygen. Dense soils can "suffocate" plants. Perlite contributes to the lightening of the soil, makes it more ethereal and reduces the likelihood of compaction.
How to use perlite
Mix perlite with your soil at a ratio of 10-35% perlite and 90-65% soil. Many of the soil substrates at Growshop Gardener contain perlite. Ask us if you need advice.
