What is vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a unique ecological, natural, inert mineral with a layered structure from the hydromicas group.

It does not rot, decompose or form mold. Vermiculite is long-lasting, odorless, non-toxic and sterile. It usually has a neutral pH of around 7.0, but this depends on its source. Vermiculite is very light and mixes easily with other substrates.

Vermiculite is widely used in construction, industry, agriculture and crop production.

  • Material with high moisture absorption
  • Environmentally safe
  • Biological stability and unlimited shelf life
  • Chemical inertness
  • Low bulk weight
  • High porosity
  • Absence of odor
  • Rich mineral composition

How do I use vermiculite in my garden?

Improving soil structure with vermiculite

Add vermiculite to your plant's soil mix to increase water and nutrient retention. Vermiculite acts as a reservoir that holds moisture and nutrients and slowly releases them into the environment around it. It will improve the uptake of substances such as ammonium, calcium, magnesium and potassium, which the plant needs for vigorous growth.

You can mix vermiculite with peat moss in a 1:1 ratio to improve aeration, prevent soil compaction, and reduce watering frequency.

This is also very useful for lawns that are located outdoors. The vermiculite will accelerate the germination of the grass and provide it with the necessary humidity so that it does not dry out during the warm summer days.

100% vermiculite growing medium

You can germinate seeds or root cuttings directly in vermiculite. During these growth phases, plants need higher humidity levels and are more susceptible to disease, and vermiculite retains moisture and reduces the risk of disease breeding. Cuttings that have grown in vermiculite can be removed very easily without damaging their roots.

Mulching with vermiculite

It is possible to use a layer of 8 cm. vermiculite to mulch plants such as roses, dahlias, tomatoes and others.

Storing bulbs and root crops in vermiculite

If you place bulbs or root vegetables in a container and cover them with vermiculite, it will absorb unnecessary moisture, preventing rot and protecting them from temperature differences.

Vermiculite is also very suitable for use in vases. Well-drained vermiculite will provide the necessary humidity for plants, while eliminating the risk of water spillage. You can use it repeatedly!
